Multi-Cultural Independent Living Center of Boston, Inc. (MILCB) Opens 2010-11 Outreach Campaign at Reggie Lewis Center

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Multi-Cultural Independent Living Center of Boston, Inc. (MILCB) will launch its 2010-11 Outreach Campaign at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Athletic Center in Roxbury on Thursday, May 20Th at 11 A.M.

This Outreach Campaign is an area-wide effort by MILCB to inform Greater Boston of the ongoing advocacy, empowerment and support to persons of all ages with disability to live as independently as possible within their community.

Featured on the morning’s agenda May 20Th will be Steve R. Williams, MD, who is Chief & Chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and a Specialist in Spinal Cord Injury at the Boston Medical Center. Dr, Williams is also an Associate Professor at Boston University’s School of Medicine. Also, Charles Carr, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and Gloria Fox, State Representative.

MILCB is a non-profit consumer-controlled, community-based organization, headed by Maurice A. Williams (Tony), Executive Director and a long-time advocate for the rights of persons living with disabilities, who will serve as Chairman of this Outreach Campaign.

MILCB provides independent living skills and advocacy as well as technical assistance to the community such as ADA awareness by and for persons with all types of disabilities. It is dedicated to assuring physical and programmatic access to housing, employment, transportation, communities, recreational facilities, and health and social services. MILCB’s many personalized programs offer people with disabilities an alternative to costly and often inhumane institutionalization.

As part of this 2010-2011 Outreach Campaign, MILCB will be looking at ways to best develop additional resources to better serve consumers and our community. This will be an opportunity to help develop an agenda for the future to identify and address the unique needs of persons with disabilities. It will be an informed and coordinated approach to addressing consumer and community concerns, as well as eliminating barriers to active participation in community and family life.

Areas Served by MILCB include Dedham, Dorchester, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Milton, Roslindale, Roxbury and West Roxbury.
